Cristian Mungiu, Palme d’Or-winning director of '4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days,' is stepping into his first English-language feature with Neon’s acquisition of 'Fjord,' a family drama set in Norway. The film follows a Romanian father (Stan) and a Norwegian mother (Reinsve) as they navigate the complexities of new life in a remote Norwegian village, where suspicion and small-town scrutiny threaten to upheave their family. The story explores themes of cultural clash, community, and the fragile bonds of family amidst social turbulence.

The film’s cast reunites Stan and Reinsve, who previously starred together in Aaron Schimberg’s 'A Different Man.' This marks their second onscreen pairing as a couple, following their collaboration in that indie. Production in Norway has wrapped, and the project is a co-production involving Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, France, and Romania, supported by Eurimages and Creative Europe MEDIA. The international nature of the project reflects Mungiu’s reputation for nuanced, socially engaged storytelling, now translated into an English-language context. More context: News.

Neon’s deal with Goodfellas covers the U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, and New Zealand, with the distributor planning a nationwide theatrical release in the U.S. The negotiations were led by Sarah Colvin for Neon and Eva Diederix for Goodfellas. This marks another high-profile addition to Neon’s slate, which includes recent Cannes winners and titles from directors like Joachim Trier and Julia Ducournau, further cementing its reputation for championing auteur-driven cinema.

The film is billed as a Norway-Sweden-Denmark-Finland-France-Romania co-production, with a lineup of production companies including Mobra Films, Eye-Eye Pictures, and others. Mungiu’s previous Palme d’Or winner, '4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days,' has set a high bar for this debut, which is expected to resonate with both critics and festival audiences. The project’s international backing and acclaimed director suggest 'Fjord' could be a strong contender in the festival circuit, especially with Neon’s track record of distributing Palme winners, including last year’s 'Anora.'
